Flores has become a very popular tourist destination. The panorama of red sunset and kapok tree silhouettes in little seaport Labuhan Bajo will deeply enter your soul. Absolute spectacle of the island is a volcano Kelimutu with three multicoloured crater lakes. There is also interesting Christian culture.
Yet 18 thousand years ago there was a dwarfish man living on the island of Flores. It was the smallest kind of all hominids, totally different from Homo Sapiens.
There are seven lakes on Flores, all located in the volcano hollows. Lake Funda is bounded with vegetation and hydrangeas and it is probably the most beautiful one. Lakes Branca, Seca, Compida, Rasa, Lomba and Funda das Lajes also dispose of peaceful atmosphere and spectacular beauty.
Flores is kind of paradise for fishermen. Crystal clear water splashing onto the grit covered beach, hugged by rocks. Especially Lagedo and Patelo (Ponta dos Ileus), Fajaziha, Ponta, Albarnaz and Cedros are incredibly beautiful areas. Santa Cruz, Lajes and Faja Grande have natural pools. Flores also offers great conditions for sailing and windsurfing.
The celebration of the holy spirit is the most important event on the island. The tradition is closely with religious feelings of the Flores inhabitants.
Bali has been inhabited since early prehistoric times firstly by descendants of a prehistoric race who migrated through mainland Asia to the Indonesian archipelago, thought to have first settled in Bali around 3000 BC. Stone tools dating from this time have been found near the village of Cekik in the island's west.
The First European contact with Bali is thought to have been when Dutch explorer Cornelis de Houtman arrived in 1597, though a Portuguese ship had foundered off the Bukit Peninsula as early as 1585. Dutch rule over Bali came later, was more aggressively fought for, and was never as well established as in other parts of Indonesia such as Java and Maluku.
